An Integrated Experimental / Simulation Environment for Material Selection and Design

This paper describes a set of in-situ mechanical loading / synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments done on copper iron alloys at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source. The goal of the experiments is to measure crystal lattice strains in the two phase materials under load in order to better understand how deformation is partitioned in two phase alloy systems. Synchrotron x-rays have distinct advantages over neutrons in terms of scattering vector coverage and exposure times. The paper also describes the modeling formulation that is employed in conjunction with the experiments. This is a modeling environment we refer to as the Digital Material.
